Song Xu’s Five Mountains

[Song Xu’s Five Mountains Painting Volume]

The Five Mountains Painting Volume, painted by Song Xu in the Ming Dynasty, and colored in silk, 24.9 cm vertically and 75.9 cm horizontally
The continuation of the Shiqu Baoji records the Eight Seals of the Qianqing Palace
The Five Mountains are the general name of the five famous mountains in China, referring to Mount Taishan in the east, Huashan in the west, Songshan in the middle, Hengshan in the north and Hengshan in the south. The Five Mountains originated from the worship of mountains and rivers of ancient Chinese people, and were linked with the worship of the king to the mountain gods. This picture shows the natural beauty of the five mountains, such as sunny sunshine, Taihua clear autumn, two colors of melting peaks, snow cover in Hengsai, and two rooms competing for wonders. The work uses the method of contrast between dark and light, and virtual and real to make the picture clear. In the composition, the painter used the traditional Pingyuan composition method. The scenery is close to large and far from small, close to real and far from virtual, with a strong sense of depth. The brushwork is rough, natural and elegant, and the brushwork is powerful, which is quite like the gloomy and boundless charm of Shen Zhou’s paintings in his later years
It is described in the “continued compilation of the treasure book of painting”
