[Chen Daofu Plum Blossom and Narcissus Axis]

Plum Blossom and Narcissus Axis, Ming Dynasty, Chen Daofu, paper version, ink brush, 72.8 cm vertically and 35 cm horizontally
The title of this picture is: “Who knows that there is musk in snow and ice.”. There are two sides: Zhu Wen, the “Secret Collection of Town House”, and Zhu Wenjian, the “Dongwu Literature Hengshan Aristocratic Family”
Chen Daofu’s freehand brushwork of flowers and birds is developed from the painting of Yuan Dynasty. Although it comes from Shen Zhou and Wen Zhengming, it is not limited to his teacher, and his works are peaceful and comfortable. In this painting, the plum blossom is in the main position of the picture, and the branches stretch around, echoing with the narcissus. The picture shows the vigorous and wanton branches of plum blossom through the strokes of stumbling and flying white. The plum branches are intermittent. In fact, the strokes are broken and connected, with full charm. Plum blossom is vivid and lifelike with dripping ink. The blooming narcissus is sketched with a simple pen, which is pure and elegant, quiet and meaningful
The painter can skillfully use and change with the different images in terms of the slow speed of the strokes, the thickness of the lines, and the intensity of the ink color, to show the rhythmic feeling caused by mistakes. This painting is free and easy, ink is dripping, easy and delicate, simple and elegant, vividly showing the beauty of plum blossom and the elegance of narcissus, reflecting the ink taste of literati ink freehand brushwork at that time.
