The caption on this page reads: “Zhou Chen of Dongcun is freehand brushwork for Pei Ju in Chunquan”. Seal “Jingyuanzhai”
This picture is another name picture. It was made by Zhou Chen for a scholar named Pei and Chunquan. The picture begins with Pei Jun’s Thatched Cottage as the center. The Thatched Cottage is spacious and bright, with simple furnishings, and the ancient pines outside the hall are coiled. The master is sleeping at his desk, and a boy outside the hall is sweeping with a broom, which reflects the interest of being quiet and elegant. After that, the Banqiao is connected to the shore, the spring water is rippling, the green mountains are winding in the distance, and the Pinghu Lake is boundless. Chinese paintings often depict literati and hermits sleeping in the daytime to show their indifference to the outside world, implying that they have different enjoyment from those who work as officials, and promoting the philosophy of self-emancipation and self-comfort. The painter skillfully highlights the water of the Banqiao River in the close view to show the meaning of “spring spring”, and also expresses “small hidden” with false sleep to illuminate the theme
This work inherits the tradition of “courtyard style” painting in the Southern Song Dynasty in artistic style. The composition is concise and compact, the shape is accurate and vivid, the figure lines are fine and smooth, and the mood is vivid. The brush of the tree stone is hard, sharp and sharp. It is mostly cracked with a small axe. The ink color is thick and clear, which shows the artist’s superb painting skills.
