Each page has a different style of pen, imitating Gao Kegong, Shen Zhou, Huang Gongwang, Ni Yunlin, Mi’s father and son in turn. Dong Qichang has painted a large number of small scenes of imitating the ancients, which reflects his understanding and practice of the predecessors’ brush and ink techniques. Gao Shiqi said that Dong Qichang “is facing the ancient times with new ideas in the Dharma”, and “facing the ancient” and “changing the ancient” is exactly the painting realm Dong Qichang pursues.
