This picture shows Confucius, Laozi and Arhat in red sitting under a tree to explore metaphysics. The three wise elders in the painting are serious in face, attentive in expression, and Confucius is elegant, honest, and persuasive; Lao Tzu is dignified, cautious and eloquent. He looks at the other side and seems ready to ask questions at any time; The eyes of Arhat in red were low, serene and calm, and his frown showed that he was deep in thought. In the Ming Dynasty, with the integration of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, the paintings of religious themes also tended to be secular. The religious figures in this painting were different from the deities as offerings, separated from the stylized factors, and had distinct personality characteristics and emotional colors, and at the same time incorporated the aesthetic taste of the literati. Its figures are ancient and clumsy, dignified and elegant, reflecting the trend of literati painting in the late Ming Dynasty to pay attention to the expression of individuality. In terms of painting method, “high ancient hairline drawing” is used, which is fine and powerful, and “magnificent strokes”, which has both the sense of simplicity and the flavor of the times. The colors are ancient and cool, especially the red, blue and ochre colors of the characters’ clothing, which are stable and harmonious. The mountains, rocks and trees are outlined and colored in French, with small green and green colors, which are quiet and elegant, creating a quiet and light artistic conception that is fascinating.
