egg-white glaze printing “Taixi” cloud dragon pattern plate is 2.3 cm high, 17.8 cm in diameter and 11.4 cm in foot diameter
Open plate, shallow arc wall, circle foot. The fetal bone is firm, fine and white, and the glaze is applied inside and outside. The glaze layer is thick and opaque. The glaze is translucent, and the glaze color is white and blue, just like the color of goose egg, so it is called “egg white glaze”. There is no glaze on the exposed tire in the foot
The outer wall of the disc is engraved with a deformed lotus petal pattern for one week, a total of 16 petals, with a string pattern at the tip of the lotus petal pattern. The inside of the plate is decorated with a sun print. The center of the plate is a dragon playing with beads. The dragon, with its mouth open and five claws exposed, is dancing, and is extremely proud and fierce, with clouds and fire beads. The inner wall of the plate is decorated with eight auspicious patterns of twining lotus, and the words “Tai Xi” are symmetrically printed between the flowers. The sequence of eight auspicious words is “intestine, snail, wheel, cover, flower, bead, fish and umbrella” from the word “Tai” to the left in a counterclockwise direction
Egg-white glazed porcelain is a new high-temperature glaze fired by Jingdezhen kiln in the Yuan Dynasty based on the production of blue-white glazed porcelain. According to scientific tests, the content of calcium oxide in the egg-white glaze is lower than that of the blue-white glaze, about 5%, while the content of potassium oxide and sodium oxide increases, resulting in an increase in the high-temperature viscosity of the glaze and a wider range of firing temperatures. The trace amount of iron oxide in the glaze is the main reason why the glaze color is white and blue, which is similar to the color of goose egg
The shapes of the egg-white glazed porcelain of the Yuan Dynasty are mostly plates, bowls and high-foot bowls. The decorative techniques are mainly printing, supplemented by carving flowers. The inner walls of plates and bowls are often transversely printed with flowers or Yunlong, Yunfeng, Yunhe, Huaniao, and Liantuo with eight auspicious characters. Some utensils are molded with official inscriptions or auspicious characters between the patterns, the most common of which is the “Shufu” inscription. Therefore, sometimes people call egg-white glazed porcelain “Shufu porcelain”. In addition to “Shufu” and “Taixi”, there are also inscriptions such as “Dongwei”, “Changjiang”, “Nanshui”, “Fulu”, “Fushou”, “Baiwang”, “Tianshun Nian”, etc. The “Privy Council” and “Taixi” respectively represent the highest military organ of the Yuan Dynasty, the “Privy Council”, and the “Taixi Monastery”, which is the institution in charge of court sacrifices. Volume 87 of the History of the Yuan Dynasty (official records) records: “The Imperial Palace of Taixi Zong……, when the temple was in its new year, it was taboo to enjoy ceremonies on the day. In the first year of the calendar, the two courtyards of Huifu and Shuxiang were removed, and the Imperial Palace of Taixi was changed to be the general system.” It can be seen from this that the firing time of the egg-white glazed porcelain inscribed “Taixi” should be after the first year of the calendar (1328), the year of the establishment of the Imperial Palace of Taixi Zong, and its lower limit should be 1352 years after the peasant uprising army occupied the Fuliang area at the end of the Yuan Dynasty
The egg-white glazed porcelain with the inscription “Tai Xi” is very rare. The late ancient ceramic appraiser, Mr. Sun Yingzhou, once wrote that only three pieces were handed down, and this is one of them, which is very precious
