Dingyao white-glazed sunflower bowl

[Ding Kiln White-glazed Sunflower Bowl]

Ding Kiln White-glazed Sunflower Bowl, Northern Song Dynasty, 6 cm high, 16.3 cm caliber, 5.9 cm foot diameter. In the Palace Museum
The mouth of the bowl is in the shape of five-petal sunflower, with an astringent edge about 1cm wide outside the mouth, a deep arc belly, and a round foot. The whole body is painted with white glaze, the glaze color is white and yellow, and there are vertical glaze marks on the outer wall
This bowl has an unglazed edge with a width of about 1 cm outside the rim, which is significantly different from the common Dingyao awn bowl. In the past, some scholars believed that this kind of bowl was fired by the “branch ring hanging firing method” in the middle and late Northern Song Dynasty of Ding Kiln, that is, the bowl and pan mouth were placed on the branch ring along the frame, and several of them were fired in the sagger at a certain interval in the forward direction. Because the mouth edge had to contact with the branch ring, the glaze about 1 cm wide was scraped off a week to form this wide and astringent edge phenomenon. However, archaeological excavation data of the kiln site in recent years show that there is no evidence of the use of “branch ring hanging burning” in the strata of the Northern Song or Jin Dynasties of Ding Kiln. The wide and astringent edge bowls or dishes unearthed were fired by the method of branch nail firing or the common covering firing method of Ding Kiln, and the number of firing was very small, belonging to a relatively special variety at that time
