[Bronze Nose Button Glow Puppet Pattern Print]
Bronze Nose Button Glow Puppet Pattern Print, Western Han Dynasty, with a diameter of 2.3 cm and a height of 1.4 cm
Printed copper cast, nose button. The printed concave cast pattern shows a positive standing god with arms raised, ropes in hand, and a magic instrument hanging from the waist. It should be a Yu puppet. Yu Pui is the god who governs ghosts in the myth. It is said that he lives in Dushuo Mountain and guards the ghost gate where thousands of ghosts go in and out. When encountering evil ghosts, he will tie them with reed ropes to feed the tiger. In the Han Dynasty, Yu puppet was regarded as the door god. On the first day of the first month of the new year, its image was painted on the door to ward off ghosts and evil spirits. Liu Zhao, in the Book of Rites in the Later Han Dynasty, noted that “Yu puppet is painted holding a reed rope to ward off evil spirits”. The features of god and man shown in this print pattern are consistent with it.
