In ancient Chinese myths and legends, the bluebird is the servant bird of the Queen Mother of the West. Xiwangmu lives in “the south of the West Sea, the shore of quicksand, after the red water, before the black water”. “The Classic of Mountains and Seas – The Classic of the North of the Sea” records that Guishan Mountain “has three bluebirds in the south, which feed on the Queen Mother of the West”. There are many stories about the prince of the east and the queen of the west in the myths of the Han Dynasty. It is very common to set up shrines to pray for gods from the Son of Heaven to the people of the Li people. There is an excellent story in Zhang Hua’s History of Natural History in the Jin Dynasty: “Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty was good at immortality and worshipped famous mountains and lakes in order to seek immortality. At that time, the Queen Mother of the West sent an envoy to take a white deer and told the emperor to come, which was for Zhang Jiuhua Hall to wait for. On the seventh day of July, at the seventh quarter of the leak, the Queen Mother took a purple cloud carriage and went to the west of the hall, facing east to the west, wearing seven kinds of green air on her head, and was as gloomy as clouds. There were three birds as big as black, which were placed next to the servant mother. At that time, there were nine tiny lamps, and the emperor was facing west to the east. The Queen Mother took seven peaches, which were as big as bullets, and ate five with the emperor, and the mother ate two. The emperor eats peaches, often with the core on his knees. Mother said: ‘What will we do if we take this check?’ The emperor said, ‘This peach is sweet and you want to plant it.’ The mother laughed and said, ‘This peach has a solid life for three thousand years.’ “
Although there are many people who use bird pattern as the subject matter in the pattern print, this print is more special. The bird in the pattern carries a basket, which is easy to identify. In addition, there are several patterns of three birds in the collection of the Forbidden City, which may also represent blue birds.
