Zhang Bolin’s Chinese Photography Collection in 1909 (7) Guangzhou

On January 4, 1909, an American geologist, Zhang Bolin, and his son, Luo Lin, set out from Chicago and arrived in Shanghai on February 2 of the same year. During his stay in China, Zhang Bolun and his son successively visited 13 provinces including Jiangsu, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hubei, Sichuan, Henan, Zhili, Shanxi, and took more than 600 photos recording the social life of the late Qing Dynasty, which were later summarized into a photo album in 1909=“ http://www.laozhaopian5.com/jingdian/1891.html “target=”_ Blank “>Zhang Bolin’s Collection of Chinese Photography 。

On February 18, 1909, the delegation ended inIn Wuzhou, Guangxi, we took a boat down the Xijiang River, arrived at Sanshui on the 19th, and then took a train to Guangzhou on the same day.

1909年2月20日，罗林一行游览广州，来到了5层楼。罗林站在镇海楼的第五层上，往下方俯拍，可以看到一段完整的广州城城墙，远处的山坡上的建筑为观音阁，后来被拆改建为孙中山纪念碑。

罗林在路边的稻田旁，两位农人在浇菜收菜。

轿夫们将他们一行抬到白云山下，准备徒步登山。

罗林观察到白云山几乎都是花岗岩山体，山上有很多坟茔，它们由同心马蹄形的低矮围墙组成，并圈成一个梯田状的平台。

罗林在回忆中提到了轿夫，他们把我们抬到山脚下，穿着薄布裤，身体的上半身、小腿和脚完全裸露，照片中两个轿夫在一座巨大的坟茔前，左边一人旁的碑刻还刻有“探花及第”的字样。

山路转弯处的山坡上，有着一座全完由白色的石头砌成的新墓。

白云山的后山，山势环绕，像靠背椅一般的风水，正中的位置，也修建有一座很大的坟茔，山下的谷地隐约可见几户人家。

快到山顶处，山坡的斜棱仍然建有坟茔，能在此修墓的人家想必非官即富。

在白云山顶，罗林远眺山下，远处的珠江如一条白色的细带子，山路曲折而下。

白云山的这一面山坡，有着大量的坟茔密集紧挨一处，这一面明显风水较好，吸引着那时富贵之家的来此建坟。

山脚下，罗林发现一支挑着大粪的队伍，在他眼中看来，这就是广州城的污水处理系统。

罗林在回忆中对广东人评价很高，他认为广东人是一个非常活跃和勤劳。

考察团2月22日结束广州的行程，乘船前往香港，再于2月24日从香港乘船，2月27日抵达上海，2月28日乘船沿长江前往汉口。
