Zhang Bolin’s Chinese Photography Collection in 1909 (24) From Chengdu, Xinjin to Pengshan

On January 4, 1909, an American geologist, Zhang Bolin, and his son, Luo Lin, set out from Chicago and arrived in Shanghai on February 2 of the same year. During his stay in China, Zhang Bolun and his son successively visited 13 provinces including Jiangsu, Guangdong, Guangxi, Hubei, Sichuan, Henan, Zhili, Shanxi, and took more than 600 photos recording the social life of the late Qing Dynasty, which were later summarized into a photo album in 1909=“ http://www.laozhaopian5.com/jingdian/1891.html “target=”_ Blank “>Zhang Bolin’s Chinese Photography.

The following photos are taken by the delegation inAfter staying in Chengdu for a few days, we left Chengdu, passed Xinjin and arrived in Pengshan County (April 14 to April 15, 1909). The photo was taken:

The delegation left at 8:10 on April 14, 1909, passed through the south gate of Chengdu, had lunch in Xinjin County at noon, and arrived at Qinglongchang (today’s Qinglong Town, Pengshan County) at 7:30 p.m Overnight. Depart at 6:50 on April 15, arrive at Jiangkou Town, Pengshan County at noon, and board the passenger ship directly to Yichang at 2:30 p.m

ps: Due to the low water level of the Minjiang River, their large ships from Yichang could not go up before and had to berth in Jiangkou Town, Pengshan County, so the members of the delegation had to travel to Jiangkou Town by land in sedan chair

Luo Lin recalled that they left Chengdu from the south gate. Although there were some twists and turns along the southwest road, However, the initial route was a flat village, similar to the previous road to Guanxian County

这张图是罗林在途中遇到的一个推着封闭木桶的独轮车，他在注释中称之为成都的污水处理系统，其实就是粪桶。

罗林来到这里让轿夫停了下来，他拍摄了此处的沟渠风光，左侧的流水显然是从都江堰而来。

一群人在拉着不知道什么重物，他们分成两排，占据了道路。为了让路，有一个独轮车夫将他的车子放到田地里。

到了中午，坐轿子的考察团成员先行赶到新津县吃午饭，而给他们挑行李的挑夫们则慢了很多，这让罗林他们等了很长时间，可惜罗林没有在新津拍摄照片。

罗林的回忆，在新津出发后，道路的左侧是微红色土壤的梯田，到了5点左右，挑夫们体力不支，提出不走了想就近过夜，由于要赶第二天的船，罗林他们好说歹说，终于在休息很久后继续出发，大约晚上7点半到达青龙场过夜。

4月15日早上6点50分，考察团离开了青龙场，在晨光中，罗林发现了路边的一处罂粟田，开满花的田野让他眼前一亮，赶紧停下来拍下这张照片。

罗林让伯顿教授站在罂粟田中，那些白色与略带紫色、粉红色的罂粟花在晨光中盛开。

罗林自己也情不自禁地站在罂粟地里，让其他人拍了一张自己的照片。

沿途的某处，老张柏林和另一位成员在边走边聊，罗林拍下了他们的背影照片。下方走来一个独轮车，上面坐着一个壮实的官差模样的人，胸口可看到“巡兵”两个字，从照片中看左边的岷江水位确实不高，而道路的阶梯状，应该是经历了水位上涨所致。

稍微往前行一段距离，遇到了一位挑着茅草的汉子，不知道是自己用作燃料，还是准备挑到集市去卖掉，他的身后是四人抬的轿子，可能坐着其中一位考察团成员。

沿途的一处集镇，罗林又拍下了他父亲穿行在街巷中的照片，房屋后面远处是一座高耸的牌坊，旁边是更高的尖塔，感觉这很似西方的尖顶建筑风格，可能是个教堂。

在岷江的岸边，罗林拍下了整个队伍，这条路很细，几乎就是田埂，抬轿的轿夫和独轮车夫小心翼翼的走着，坐独轮车上的那些人可能是护送的士兵，从队伍中我们看不到挑夫，应该还在远远的后面，想必那些挑着重物的挑夫们更为艰辛。

在岷江岸边的道路上，考察团中的一辆独轮车遇到大石头被卡住了，大家都停了下来，帮着去修理，罗林觉得有趣，立即拍下了这张画面，从他们脸上可以看到焦急的神态。

过了这处浅滩，对面很快就到江口了，轿夫们抬着轿子涉水而行。

快到中午的时候，他们乘坐渡船到达江口镇，并登上了即将前往宜昌的大船，罗林给安全护送他们到达的几位新津县练勇拍了一张合影。

考察团一行登上船之后，看到江口镇岷江段的一处巨大水车，河道中间好像被围隔开，应该是低水位时候为了增大水量，围成堰以便水车运行浇灌。

考察团于1909年4月15日从彭山县江口镇登船，4月17日抵达嘉定（乐山）。
