Jin Tingbiao (? – 1767) is also good at figure, landscape, flower and bird painting. When Emperor Gaozong made his second tour to the south, he made an imperial edict by presenting paintings and worshipped them in the inner court. The scholar in this painting leans in front of the stone platform, holding the orchid in both hands, and focuses on appreciating, which makes people smile. Jin Tingbiao changed the refined and dignified appearance of the palace figure painting, endowed it with dynamic facial features and demeanor, and was able to stand out among the court painters. In addition to his poems, Emperor Qianlong praised him for being “divine” and “unparalleled in the world”, which fully demonstrated his importance to the paintings of Jin Tingbiao.
