Lang Shining (1688-1766), an Italian, joined the Catholic Jesuit Church as a monk at the age of 19, studied western painting and architecture. He came to China at the age of 27 and dedicated himself to the inner court as a painter. He served successively as court painter in the three dynasties of Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong.
