Although Dong Qichang (1555-1636 AD) was a scholar, he did not make remarkable achievements in his official career, but devoted his life to the appreciation and creation of calligraphy and painting, becoming the most influential artist and critic in the late Ming Dynasty. Zhang Jiuling, a famous poet and prime minister of the Tang Dynasty, was ostracized by powerful officials in the imperial court. The Emperor Xuanzong gave him a white feather fan to express his aspiration, which implied that he was wise and protected his life. Dong Qichang wrote this book at the age of seventy-eight (1632), and it still keeps the consistent elegant and cheerful rhythm, which makes people feel endless aftertaste.
