Shen Zhou (1427-1509), born in Changzhou (now Suzhou, Jiangsu Province), has the name of Qinan, Shitian and Baishiweng. Calligraphy is vigorous and powerful. It imitates Huang Tingjian (1045-1105) and paints landscapes, figures, flowers and birds. It has a decisive influence in the painting world in the middle of the Ming Dynasty and is regarded as the first of the four great painters in the Ming Dynasty.
