Square zu wine vessel of Fu, mid Western Zhou period, 977/75-918 BCE

  • Image Number:, Ritual vessel
  • Material:mineral/metal/bronze
  • Description:
This vessel was made during the reign of King Zhao and King Mu of the Western Zhou Dynasty. Compared with the traditional shape, there are elephant trunk shaped ears extending upward and curving on both sides of the abdomen, which is rare in design. The decorative lines are gorgeous, whether it is the inverted symmetrical bird pattern at the top of the neck, the symmetrical dragon pattern at the bottom, the curly horn animal face pattern at the abdomen, or the symmetrical bird pattern at the left and right of the base, which are all outlined in a curve full of tension; Most of the patterns and outlines are designed with rounded feather patterns to create a dynamic sense of rotation. The same feather patterns are also in the form of hollowed out high relief, and are decorated on the lines of square figures. Three lines of 14 characters were cast on the inner bottom of the abdomen: “Take the morning after morning, enjoy the evening, and write a composition about Xin Baozun Yi.” The main idea is that the owner “Fu” cast this sacrificial vessel in the temple in memory of his father “Rixin” to sacrifice wine and food to his ancestors sooner or later
