Since the 34th year of Jiajing (1555), Suzhou has been attacked by Japanese pirates. Wen Beren fled Nanjing with his family and lived near Bailuquan Nunnery in Sheshan. At that time, Fumao, a monk in the Nunnery, was originally the abbot of Zhutang Temple in Suzhou, and was also a member of Wen Zhengming’s circle of friends. The two of them and their friends often stayed at the Nunnery’s Chinese Yan Poetry Festival, which was very popular. This painting may have been painted for Fumao.
