这组图片来自《Les Grottes de Touen-houang》（敦煌石窟），由法国汉学家伯希和（Paul Pelliot）编著。全书共六卷，收录1908年伯希和考察团从新疆进入敦煌所拍摄：莫高窟外景、洞窟（约一百八十二窟）彩塑、壁画等照片。
就敦煌石窟而言，最早进行全面详细的考察，当属1908年法国人伯希和带领的考察团的工作。
1908年2月25日伯希和考察团从新疆进入敦煌，他们来到莫高窟以后，进行洞窟的编号、测绘、摄影和文字记录工作。从伯希和考察团拍摄到今天已有百年的时间，在这百年当中，由于自然、历史以及人为的关系，洞窟已经发生了这样那样的变化。有的甚至发生了根本性的变化，在当时完好的彩塑壁画，到了今天早已不存，但却在伯希和图录中意外得到保留，弥足珍贵。
