These dragons have a snout like an elephant’s trunk, lotus in their mouths, wings and scrolling tails. The colours are cleverly alternated and changed in each roundel and half flower. Scholars have proposed a connection between these doucai wares and the Chenghua emperor’s favourite mistress, Concubine Wan 萬貴妃 (AD 1430–1487). She entered the palace at the age of four to serve at the Xuande emperor’s court. Concubine Wan was seventeen years senior to the Chenghua emperor. She gradually manipulated him, promoting the advancement of herself and her family.
