Comments:Mutare (formerly Umtali) is the fourth largest city in Zimbabwe, close to the border with Mozambique. Although the city was founded in 1897, the region has a long history of trading caravans passing through this area on the routes from the Indian Ocean, such as the port of Sofala, to inland settlements, such as the Great Zimbabwe. Carvings, pottery and figures are found throughout the region as well as evidence of trade routes estimated from the late African Iron Age (c. 900 AD) through successive kingdoms, and the colonial period.
