Comments:Zwalf 1985Small seated figures of the Buddha in meditation are commonly found in the mandorlas or edging the haloes of larger images, in the Gandharan tradition. The shrines at Mingoi were free-standing, many with a rich decoration of small stucco figures. In this case the main image may also have been of clay or stucco, with a wooden surround, tenoned and mortised to fit. Similar carved and gilt wooden surrounds with seated Buddhas have been found at other sites in the Tarim basin, notably near Kucha.
