Description:
Porcelain vase with underglaze blue decoration. This vase has a globular body, a narrow neck with a tapering foot and flat base. It is decorated with a motif, repeated four times, of three pheasants perched in a tree peony growing from behind rocks and two animals, possibly tapirs, which scramble at the base. At the rim and foot there is a border of scroll work with angular flowers and around the neck a band of heart-shaped lappets. The tiny white lines scratched into the underglaze blue areas are typical both of the late Ming period and of pieces made for export to India. The base is unglazed.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:The design, especially the border around the neck, was probably influenced by Mughal Indian textiles.
