Description:
Made of egg-shell thin porcelain, this globular jar has no neck and is decorated in famille rose enamels with a smiling bald Budai Hesheng being tugged at and played with by six little boys. Budai is dressed in a loose monastic robe exposing his fat stomach. Beside him is his priestly rattan hat, banner, alms bowl, drum and stick. One child is climbing on to his shoulders while another is wrestling Budai’s rosary beads from his hand. Two other boys are pulling his large calico sack from underneath him while a further couple are pulling his leg off the sack. The inverted rim is gilded and the base bears a six-character apocryphal Qianlong reign mark in seal script in iron-red.
