The design was carved into the body in shallow relief and then copper-red added to the two dragons, underglaze cobalt-blue for the crashing waves, dragons’ manes and spines and iron-pigmented celadon for the rocks’ outer edges. Although the technique of combining underglaze red and blue was first used more than three hundred years earlier by Yuan dynasty potters at the same kiln site, Jingdezhen, the addition of celadon glaze to these items was an innovation of the late seventeenth century. The design was based on a painting by Liu yuan of 1681–1688Porcelain with underglaze copper-red, underglaze cobalt-blue, transparent and celadon glazesJingdezhen, Jiangxi province江西省, 景德鎮
