Description:
Porcelain vase with ring handles and underglaze blue decoration. This vase, modelled after a bronze, has a tall neck, flared mouth with bracket-lobed rim, broad shoulders, low waist and flared stepped foot with a flat unglazed base. Joined on either side of the neck are semi-circular ribbed handles with attached rings. Pale blue lotus scrolls cover the body with bands of plantain leaves, ‘ruyi’ heads, and leaf scroll below and above with ‘ruyi’ heads, key-fret, lotus, and leaf scroll. Below the rim border of scrolling lingzhi fungus is a four-character Zhengde reign mark in a rectangular cartouche. As is typical with Zhengde period ceramics of this quality, the foot is outlined with a curlicue border.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Another vase of this type with blurred decoration is in the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, London. Both vases were probably originally made in five-piece sets together with a tripod incense burner and two candlesticks. An example of such a set in bronze is in the British Museum. It was collected by Professor Jessica Rawson to demonstrate the use of sets in Ming rituals.
