Description:
Four-sided ‘zun’-shaped porcelain altar vase with underglaze blue decoration. This square altar vase is modelled after an ancient bronze wine container called a ‘zun’. Its elongated proportions indicate that it was probably copied from a printed illustration, rather than from an original Bronze Age vessel. The vase is decorated in shades of underglaze blue. Below the rim within a scroll-work border, on one face, is a six-character horizontal Wanli reign mark. Each face of its elongated neck, foot and sections of its belly are painted with a dragon and phoenix in different attitudes on a flower scroll ground with stylized rocks and mountains below. Monster masks in relief on each side are pierced for the attachment of ring handles. The unglazed base is flat and has a raised outer band typical of square vessels.
