Comments:This Yongzheng (1723-1735) marked “Guan” type vase was purchased from Bluetts by R.F.W. Cartwright on 21 December 1934. Bluetts had purchased the vase on 26th September 1934 from A. R. Ashwell. (Note from Dominic Jellinek). The vase was no. 497 in the Cartwright collection. The British Museum has the finest collection of guan and guan-style ceramics outside the Chinese-speaking world. It is home to both its own significant collection of these wares and it is also the permanent venue for the holdings of the Sir Percival David Collections. The large collection onsite means that scholars from around the world can come to examine this type of ceramic ware in one place, affording them with a rare opportunity for efficacious study that would be hard to duplicate in any other single place. Visitors will be able to easily compare this vase to the important precedents of the ware by seeing actual examples from the originating period of guan ware in the Song dynasty (960-1279) and also examples from the Yuan (1279-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties. It complements an existing body of Chinese ceramic material in the collections and adds a significant new dimension by representing an imperial quality revival of Song-dynasty wares made during a period of excellence and creativity in Qing dynasty ceramic history.
