This porcelain vase combines these three great passions. It is modelled on the shape of an antique ‘arrow pot’, a vessel with short tubes either side of the narrow neck. In earlier dynasties, people played a drinking game of pitching arrows into the tubes and neck of larger bronze and ceramic pots of this shape. Secondly, the enamel decoration demonstrates the extraordinary skill of porcelain decorators who worked within the Palace. The painting of orchids and lingzhi (longevity fungus) with rocks is complemented by a fourteen-character poem 雲深瓊島開仙逕 (徑),春暖芝蘭花自香(yun shen qiong dao kai xian jing; chun ruan zhi lan hua zi xiang ‘A small path opens for the immortals through the deep clouds to paradise island; In the warm spring fragrance comes from iris and orchid flowers’). The three seals read 郁心 (yuxin ‘elegant heart’); 壽 (shou ‘longevity’) and 奇 (qi ‘marvellous’).
