Porcelain vase with monochrome blue glaze and white slip decoration. Modelled loosely on a bronze altar vessel, this pear-shaped vase stands on a low foot and relief-moulded lion masks are applied on either side of the flaring neck. Covered with a high-fired monochrome blue glaze, it is further ornamented in white slip with a basket of chrysanthemums on the front and back face. Details such as the lions’ mane, eyes, eyebrows and the character 王 ‘wang’ [king] on their foreheads are also added in slip. The base and interior are covered with a blue-tinged glaze with blue splashes.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:The 王 ‘wang’ character always appears on lions as the lion is king of the beasts. Even modern porcelain figures of lions often have the character marked on the forehead.
