Description:
Porcelain gourd vase with rectangular lower bulb, and rounded upper bulb with tapering neck. The vase has green enamel over a white felspathic glaze, white glazed base. There are traces of gilt peony scrolls on the upper and lower sections.

Comments:Published PDF date : 16th century Room 95 label text:PDF 534Gourd-shaped sheng vase The gourd-shaped sheng vase is covered with a bright green glaze ground and with cut out gold foil which was incised and fired at a low temperature. This decorative technique is known by the Japanese term 金襴手 (kinrande ‘gold brocade style’). The gold wears away from the porcelain which is why so much of the detail is missing.
