Description:
Globular porcelain vase resembling a lychee with monochrome red-and-brown glaze. This unique vase has a globular profile resembling a lychee with a narrow inverted opening at the neck. It is moulded with small bosses and overglazed with a patchy brown-and-red monochrome glaze.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:The mineral colourant for this glaze is iron oxide and it is not particularly stable, which explains why it has worn off the protruding bosses. The inverted neck suggests a rather late Ming date for this unusual piece. Such mouth openings are also found on early seventeenth-century incense burners (see BM 1936.1012.98).
