Period:Qing dynasty Production date:1752-1770 (circa)
Materials:porcelain
Technique:painted
Subjects:heraldry
Dimensions:Diameter: 13 centimetres
Description:
‘Famille rose’ teapot stand with a royal Danish monogram. This shaped hexafoil tray is painted with two shields in the centre, one containing a portrait of a lady in a low-cut dress, with a rose at her bosom and another in her hair, the other entwined initials. These shields are flanked by horns-of-plenty, surmounted by a crown and have as supporters Neptune, the Roman god of the sea, with a trident and a fish on the left, and another deity on the right, both standing on a green ground among flowers. The angular sides are painted with a border of diaper and leaf motifs with a peacock on top en grisaille, interrupted by a large schooner flying a red flag with white cross.

Comments:Harrison-Hall & Krahl 1994:The portrait depicts Queen Juliana Maria, wife of King Frederick V of Denmark (r. 1746-66), whom he married in 1752; the initials are probably ‘J M’. The ship carries the Danish flag. Another dish of this service is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (Hervouet and Bruneau, 1986, no. 14.25); for another service made for Juliana Maria, see BM Franks. 612; compare also a dish with related design, dated to 1763 (BM Franks. 891+). Trays of this form were used as supports for teapots.
