Description:
Square porcelain tile with underglaze blue decoration. This square tile has an unglazed stepped edge with cut-off corners. It is painted beneath the glaze on the upper surface in underglaze blue outlines, showing a scholar examining the floor. He is wearing a loose cross-over full-length robe which is tied at the front and a scholar’s cap with mantling. He is sitting cross-legged on a rattan-covered dais in front of a large undecorated standing screen. Beside him are the accoutrements of a refined scholar: the ‘qin’ and a pile of books. The reverse of the tile is unglazed, indicating that it was made to be seen from one side only.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:It is difficult to be certain who this scholar is, but it has been suggested that he may be the Yuan dynasty playwright from Beijing, Guan Hanqing (c.1240-c.1320), who is dubbed ‘the father of traditional [Chinese] drama’. There are some sixty plays attributed to him, including his most famous play “Dou E Yuan” [The Injustice to Dou E].
