Description:
Earthenware ‘goutou’ tile terminal with moulded decoration and yellow glaze. This circular ‘goutou’ tile terminal has a raised border 2 cm wide and a relief-moulded dragon in the centre, covered with a much-worn amber-yellow glaze. The dragon has a particularly thin scaly body and paws with five fat splayed claws. It twists round, prancing on its front legs and turning its back legs under and over its tail after a flaming pearl. It is quite different in quality from the earlier dragon tile terminals, made of a coarser fabric with a poorer dragon design.

Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Zhu Qizhen (1427-64), the Zhengtong emperor, was the only Ming emperor to rule twice. He ascended the throne first at the age of eight in 1436. At twenty-two he led an unsuccessful army against the Mongols and endured the ignominy of captivity by them. Zhu Qizhen’s younger brother assumed imperial rule in his absence to lessen the shame of his capture. Later he was released but became a semi-prisoner in the Forbidden City until he managed to seize back the throne from his brother ten years before he died aged forty. The Zhengtong emperor was then buried in the Yuling at the Shisanling [Thirteen Ming Tombs], Beijing, together with his wives, the empress Chen (died 1468) and the empress Zhou (died 1504). This circular ‘goutou’ tile terminal is said to come from the Zhengtong emperor’s tomb at the Shisanling.
