Description:
These are two narrow strips of silk tapestry with floral pattern, and perhaps showing part of a medallion. They share the same pattern and weave structure as the tapestry used for the sutra wrapper MAS.858. Kesi is the name given to a Chinese tapestry weave in silk. It derived from tapestry weave in wool but the effect is more luxurious and exquisite in silk. Early kesi were usually made in a strip shape. The earliest known dated strip of kesi is the ribbon with small rosettes on a green ground excavated in Tomb TAM.206 at Astana, Turfan, which is dated to 688. It is identical in style and technique to the ones found at Dunhuang, and it is likely that these pieces are all from the same period. Weave structures: Warp: silk, Z twisted, single, white, 18 ends/cm; Weft: silk, untwisted, single, white, green, blue, orange and purple etc., c.85 lats/cm. Weave structure: 1/1 plain weave with discontinuous wefts.

Comments:This strip shows the same weave and decoration of MAS.906.a. The two fragments formed a single strip probably used as a suspension loop for a narrow banner.
