Description:
This rectangular fragment was woven in warp faced compound twill, which was a popular weave structure during the early and high Tang periods. The ground is striped in two colours: light brown (probably originally red) and white. Blue, green and dark green are used for the pattern, including some clusters of flowers and small confronting birds standing on leaves and holding flowers in their beaks. Since the pattern is not framed with a roundel or lozenge, it may be dated to the high Tang, late 7th to early 8th centuries. The pattern has a repeat of 6.6 cm in the warp direction. The pattern was reconstructed by F.H. Andrews and published by Stein. Weave structures: Warp: silk, untwisted, single, white and light brown for ground alternately, blue, green and dark green for pattern, 45 groups/cm (including maximum 45 blue, 45 green, 45 dark green and 45 white/light brown, for some area); Inner weft: silk, untwisted, single, light brown, 14 lats/cm; Binding weft: silk, untwisted, single, light brown, 14 lats/cm.
