Description:
Three fragments share this Stein number: two in the V&A and one in the British Museum. The black colour of these two fragments is deep and extremely well-preserved, especially when compared with the black in contemporary European textiles which tends to fade to brown, or deteriorates as the iron mordant in the dye rots the silk. Discontinuous supplementary wefts in orange are woven into the black twill ground to create the pattern, showing an incomplete roundel design in orange silk. It is not possible to identify the motif, but Stein suggested that the design might show part of a bird. The circular motif is a typically Chinese pattern. Weave structures: Warp: silk, S twisted, single, black, 65 ends/cm; Foundation weft: silk, untwisted, black, 22 lats/cm; supplementary weft: silk, untwisted, golden yellow, , 22 lats/cm. Pass: 1 foundation and 1 supplementary weft. Weave structure: 1/5Z twill brocaded on 5/1S twill for foundation.
