Description:
The yellow rectangular fragment MAS.942 of damask on plain weave shows a hexagon grid, with each cell enclosing a four-petal rosette. The pattern repeat is 1.6 cm in the warp direction and 6.3 cm in the weft direction. A selvedge is left on one side. L:S.397 is from the same piece. Attached to the fragment by purple thread is a paper tag giving the Stein number possibly in Stein’s handwriting or that of his assistants, Miss F.M.G. Lorimer or F.H. Andrews. Hexagonal grid patterns appeared fairly late. These two fragments therefore probably date from the late Tang to the Five Dynasties. Weave structures: Warp: silk, untwisted, single, yellow, 44 ends/cm; Weft: silk, untwisted, single, yellow, 29 lats/cm. Weave structure:2-4 patterning weave for pattern on 1/1 plain weave for foundation.
