Description:
These two square fragments of twill damask (one in the British Museum, the other in the V&A) are damask textiles woven with warps and wefts in different colours. They are in yellow and white silk, showing a conventional trailing foliate design. Patterns of scrolling leaves of this kind became popular in the Liao and Song dynasties, reaching a peak in the Jin (1115-1234) and Yuan dynasties (1279-1368). Weave structures: Warp: silk, S twisted, single, white, 45 ends/cm; Weft: silk, untwisted, single, yellow, 19 lats/cm. Weave structure: 1/5S twill for pattern on 5/1Z twill for foundation.
