Comments:Zwalf 1985The Mahābodhi temple commemorating the Buddha’s Enlightenment at Bodh Gayā was copied in buildings and in miniature. Small models survive in several collections, and in 1957 a model Mahābodhi complex was reported as being preserved in Tibet where the present model was found. These models appear to be close imitations of the temple before the restoration of 1880-1 and show the projection at the rear on which the Bodhi tree then stood. Holes at the four corners of the upper terrace secured the corner chapels. Like other examples, it has a Burmese-looking arch at the foot of the spire which may date from a Burmese restoration in the late 11th century.
