Comments:This is a good example of a later tea brick. There are three others in the British Museum collections, one fine example with Russian script (it is said that the finest tea bricks were made for export to Russia) As1963,12.3, also As1957,07.4 and As1931,1114.1. Such tea bricks were made as trade goods and used as currency, the backs being scored into equal sections that could be easily broken off. Most tea bricks were produced in China and then transported by camel or yak to Mongolia, Tibet or Siberia. In later times they became decorative collectable items rather like ink stones.
