Three panelled ivory table screen. One side is carved with the scene that Lu Wang fishing on the terrace attended by two servants while in the foreground King Wen, the founder of the Zhou dynasty, with the imperial retinue approaches. On the other side is carved with an inscription inspired by this story of Lu Wang and King Wen.

Comments:Lu Wang, also known as Lu Shang, Jiang Ziya and several other names, was retired from the corrupt Shang dynasty court to fish in the Wei River where he met King Wen of Zhou. At King Wen’s entreaty, Lu Wang consented and helped overthrow the Shang dynasty and estalish the Zhou. This is a famous and often-repeated theme of decoration in Chinese art.
