Comments:Warring States Period. Diameter 46mm. See Min Chiu 1985, and Rawson 1995, p.296, cat.no.21.3. This pommel ornament is crisply carved with a ridge around the edge defining a field of regular raised whorl-shaped spirals, enhanced by incised lines. A central, circular area has three deeply carved swirling, comma-shaped grooves bounding small areas incised with fine cross-hatching. The sides are straight and the reverse concave. On the underside is a circular groove with three small spurs. This is a fine example of a standard sword pommel of the type developed at the end of the Eastern Zhou and best known from examples found in Hunan province in late Warring States tombs. The predecessors are pommels with irregular spirals, such as those from tomb 2717 at Luoyang Zhongzhoulu. The combination of regular spirals and deeply carved scrolls seems to have coincided with the evolution of hilts and chapes decorated with face patterns. These motifs became part of a standardised repertoire for jade sword fittings, examples of which have come from Chu and Han tombs at Changsha and from the tomb of the King of Nan Yue at Canton.
