Comments:Michaelson 2006:The ‘sancai’ palette was very popular during the Tang dynasty, one of China’s golden ages, when the empire was the richest and most powerful political unit in the world. It was characterized by cultural brilliance, territorial expansion and great prosperity. The capital Chang’an (modern Xi’an) was at the eastern end of the Silk Route and was a wealthy, cosmopolitan city. The eclectic motifs, technical virtuosity and confidence of Tang craftsmen is reflected in the bold and colourful ceramic decoration of this period. The stripes and florets are typical of the ornament on polychrome woven silk of the period. ‘Wannian’ jars occur with monochrome lead glazes from the ‘sancai palette’ and also, less frequently, in white and greenware.
