Description:
Barrel-shaped porcelain stoll with ‘fahua’ decoration. This hollow barrel-shaped porcelain stool is larger than BM 1931.0511.2 and BM 1947.0712.246. It also differs in several other respects. Damaged areas of the stool reveal that the design of lions, playing with a brocade ball and ribbons, was first incised into the body, then thin strips of clay were luted on within that design. Individual ‘ruyi’ clouds and waves in the upper and lower bands are incised only. The top, which is pieced, has a more complex design of a peony with foliage in an indented double ring in the centre and four half-flowers rather than leaves around the edges. The stool is hollow, and unglazed inside. Another unusual feature is the contrast between the bands. Here the ground is turquoise throughout.
