Description:
Barrel-shaped porcelain stool with ‘fahua’ decoration. This hollow barrel-shaped porcelain stool has a domed top with a hole in the centre. The top is painted with a flower head, with four leaves at the edges. The stool is decorated in three bands ‘fahua’-style with raised slip outlines and aubergine, yellow, white, turquoise and deep blue infill. A peacock and peahen, which, according to Eberhard, are a symbol of dignity and beauty, are shown here with rocks, giant tree peonies and ‘lingzhi’ fungus. Moulded lion masks are applied within octofoil cartouches on either side. The top and bottom registers are covered with a deep blue glaze and a ring of turquoise bosses imitating the studs on a drum. It is glazed green inside.
