Comments:Harrison-Hall 2001:Both the form of this vessel, with its truncated stem, and the mark framed by a double rectangular cartouche are extremely unusual. Yet its authenticity may be verified by stylistic comparison to a short stem bowl with an identical mark in the collections of the National Palace Museum, Taipei. The Taipei example is lightly incised around the outside with the Eight Treasures of Buddhism supported on scrolling lotus blooms. Other vessels of this shape are known with underglaze blue decoration of the Eight Buddhist Treasures supported by lotus around the outside and the same rectangular framed mark inside. A water dropper with this type of mark in a vertical rectangular cartouche under the spout was excavated at the imperial kiln site of Zhushan, Jingdezhen, in 1982.White is the colour of mourning in China. When the Xuande emperor succeeded to the throne in 1426, he was in mourning for both his father, the Hongxi emperor, who had died of a heart attack after reigning for less than one year, and also for his grandfather, the Yongle emperor, who had died, probably of a stroke, in 1424, at the age of sixty-four. Records show that white porcelain utensils were ordered in 1426 for feasts in the Hall of Ancestor Worship to honour both the Hongxi and Yongle emperors. It is possible that this type of stem bowl formed part of that order.
