Description:
Porcelain stem cup with red, green and yellow enamels. This stem cup has a deep bowl with rounded sides, an everted rim and a hollow glazed stem which flares out gently. It is decorated over the glaze with enamels showing the Eight Daoist Immortals, represented in pairs riding clouds. Clockwise these are Zhang Guolao, carrying a long bamboo cane drum and two drum sticks, with Lan Caihe. Next are Han Xiangzi, playing a flute, and the other musical immortal Cao Guojiu holding castanets and wearing court dress with a winged hat. Riding the third cloud are He Xiangu, holding a lotus flower and looking male rather than female in this depiction, with Li Tieguai holding the double gourd which contains the elixir of immortality. Then Zhongli Quan, recognizable by his hare belly and fan, is shown with Lu Dongbin. The stem is painted with a band of plantain leaves and there is a key-fret border around the foot. Inside in a cloud within a roundel Lu Dongbin is represented again. He has a sword on his back and is flanked by bamboo and pine motifs. He is associated with various drinking stories and would be seen clearly after all the alcohol in the stem cup was consumed. A wave border ornaments the inner rim.The rim border is specific to the sixteenth century and the red-and-green-dominated palette was employed in the Zhengde and Jiajing eras.
