Comments:Rawson 1992:Ru ware was produced at Baofeng Qingliangsi in Henan province for the emperors Zhezong (1086-1102) and Huizong (1101-1125). When the court fled to Hangzhou the grey-green crackled Guan wares were produced there, possibly as a local replacement for Ru ware. This essentially functional shape is known in lacquerware of the Song dynasty, which appears to have had a marginally higher status than even Ru ware. Cup stands occur frequently in ‘qingbai’ porcelain from south China, and are depicted in the late Song painting “Han Xizai’s Night Revels” in the Palace Museum, Beijing, copied after the lost 10th century original by Gu Hongzhong. The Ru ware cup stand would therefore appear to have had a utilitarian role, despite its superb quality and revered place of production.
