Comments:British and Medieval Extracts (1757-1887), p.362. Temporary Register (1861-1921), p.18 “Chinese and Japanese series”.Ethno. Department record card: “China or Japan”. Characters include those to bring peace to the world / the universe and China. They are those used to command the thunder gods, in order to release from fire, disaster, plague and all kinds of difficulties. It is addressed to a tianzun (heavenly position) to bring peace. The characters face both directions. There are also circles joined by lines representing the dipper constellations. Most of the characters (those with the rain radical) are talismanic commands. Smaller characters are a translation of the large commands. The really interesting design element are two dragon- like beings each facing into the centre.
